Iraq leans toward Russia in war on Islamic State

'Iraq may request Russian air strikes against Islamic State on its soil soon and wants Moscow to have a bigger role than the United States in the war against the militant group, the head of parliament’s defense and security committee said on Wednesday.'

raqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has said he would welcome Russian air strikes on Islamic State militants in Iraq and powerful Iranian-backed Shi’ite militias hope for a partnership with Russia to counter U.S. influence.

“We are seeking to see Russia have a bigger role in Iraq. … Yes, definitely a bigger role than the Americans,” Zamili said.

Shi’ite militias, long mistrustful of the United States, see Russia’s intervention as an opportunity to turn the tables.

“The Russian intervention came at the right time and right place and we think it will change all rules of the game not only in Syria but in Iraq also,” said Muen al-Kadhimi, an aide to Hadi al-Amiri, the most powerful Shi’ite militia leader.

“The government has been relying heavily on an untrustworthy ally, which is the United States, and this fault should be fixed.”

I was talking about the Crimea. It escalated, couldn't be helped because it was part of Ukraine and yes of course they'd rightly fight to keep that region even though the majority population want to align with Russia. The point of this thread is that Russia is actively doing something against Isis, rebels against Assad (good/bad) who the fuck knows. Could be for his own gratification, two fingers up to the west because of sanctions over Ukraine or up the price of a barrel of oil.

Don't see what my age has to do with it Schoffle.

I'm 47 if its of any interest or relevance. And I have travelled extensively across eastern europe and have friends/family out there.

Re: Vladimir Putin a proper geezer
Not really schoffle, it was an invasion.

I've spent a fair bit of time down there, it was the main area where the Tartars were allowed to live, they are now objecting to russian rule.

I doubt you know much aout kiev'n rus, but if you did you would understand that ukraine/kiev is the original heartland of the slavic russians.

Putin has deliberately chose this area to cause a problem and a false enemy and gave him an opportunity to invade, copying the german's in the 30s and 40s.

Rio. It was an annexation. Bit different from an invasion.

Re: Vladimir Putin a proper geezer
Facetiousness won't make Russia guilty of those ridiculous accusations you've made all over this site.

The West has been fanning the flames in Syria and has backed Jihadis to get the Alawites out of power. We've seen in the recent past what happens when you back Sunni militants out of expediency.

In my opinion, the quicker the Russians wipe the Jihadis out, the better.

Re: Vladimir Putin a proper geezer
Thing is hammer, Putin doesn't have an electorate or media that can scructinise what he does. I'm surprised he's patience lasted so long. Probably waiting for the Ukraine stuff to die down but Crimea did want to remain under the Russian federation no more than I don't want the uk to continue to be islamified. I just wished USA. Gb, Russia and China fought together as one and rid the world of the shit.

I see.

Hammer and Pickle, you're incapable of analysis because you're too ignorant to understand what's actually going on in the world.

Nurse. I apologise, I'm sure you do a fantastic job and have to do it without prejudice etc.. But, some of us are old enough to have paid into the system for decades,,can't get housing etc etc. We suck up to a religion that kills each other, a God that drops cranes on them ffs. I'm not going to apologise for wanting a better country for my kids and that isn't going to happen unless we call a halt to Muslim takeover of my country.

Re: Vladimir Putin a proper geezer
Nurse. You just keep turning a blind eye. You must see at work who abuses the nhs, never mind your lazy bastard colleagues. We've had 20 years of letting them take over quietly, countless wars meddling. Time to call time on religion imo and drop a small tactical nuke on the Vatican while we at it, paedophiles. World will never be at peace while religion is about!
